Family Workshop 2pm : Learn traditional Serbian dances in a lively, joyful workshop. This workshop is suitable for families including all members and ages. This is for beginners – some dances will be performed in the Family Concert following the workshop and participants who also attend the concert are welcome to join in. Led by Joan Sach.

Dance Workshop 4.30pm: Mixed level workshop (suitable for beginners with no previous experience) for Serbian traditional dances. This workshop is suitable for adults and for children 10 years and older. For the last section of this workshop, the Music Workshop participants will join and play the music for the dancers. Led by Joan Sach.

Music Workshop 4.30pm: Learn traditional Serbian dance music, mixed level from grade 4 or equivalent, all kinds of instruments welcome. We will explore phrasing, ornamentation, accompaniment, and rhythms of the dances. There will be a little bit of room for improvisation, however, the pieces are taught from sheet music – please email to gundulagruen@gmail.com if you would like to receive the sheet music to practice beforehand! Please bring a music stand! For the last section of the workshop we will join the Dance Workshop and perform the dances together. Led by Gundula Gruen.

Percussion Workshop 4.30pm: Have fun with various Balkan rhythms on drums and percussion! Led by percussionist, ethnomusicologist and educator Tom Wagner, this workshop will explore various dance rhythms that are played throughout the Balkans and the Middle East. We will begin with an introduction to some typical drums e.g. Darbuka (Goblet Drum), Riqq (Tambourine), and Tupan (Bass Drum) and learn basic techniques. From there we will explore various meters not usually found in Western music – 7/8, 9/8, and 11/8. No previous experience necessary. Bring your own drum if you have one – any hand drum or small stick drum is suitable – limited instruments can be provided. Also bring pencil and paper. www.tomwagnermusic.com

Musical Dinner with Open Mic 6pm: A delicious Serbian style buffet is offered. There will be a mixture of vegetarian and meat dishes, which should cater for various diets and eating habits. This will be accompanied by open mic performances. There is no admission fee or pre-sale for the dinner, you pay for your food at the dining hall. The buffet is £7.

Open Mic: LGO would like to invite musicians, storytellers, poets, dancers, etc, to perform a piece – inspired by Serbia - on the open mic. There will be a small PA set up with 2 microphones and a couple of inputs for musicians’ instruments. A CD player will be provided for dancers with music. This is a perfect opportunity to promote any of your future events or your new album. You are welcome to spread out flyers and sell CDs. The performances will be accompanying the Musical Dinner. Performers can register by email to gundulagruen@gmail.com, alternatively put your name down upon arrival on the list at the ticket desk, or speak to the Open Mic co-ordinator in the dinner hall to secure your place. Performers may have either a half price buffet or a free drink from the bar. Please note that performing on the open mic does not give free entrance to any other performances.

THE ZIVKO FIRFOV FOLKLORE GROUP

Associated to the S.I.F.D.
Songs and Dances from Serbia, Croatia and Macedonia.

The group was formed over 50 years ago by Ken Ward, to study, preserve & teach in their original form the dances as they were done in the towns and villages of Serbia, Croatia & Macedonia. Ž ivko Firfov was a renowned collector of folkmusic & dance in his native Macedonia, & gave us permission to name the Group after him. We have no political affiliations – we simply enjoy the music & dance from that part of the world, and our members come from many different countries including parts of the former Yugoslavia.

We have a large repertoire of dances, & a collection of costumes, many of which are originals dating back to at least to the beginning of the twentieth century. We meet weekly as a club, to enjoy the social aspect of the dancing, but also to keep the old dances alive and unchanged.

JOAN SACH: Dance Workshop leader
Joan joined the Zivko Firfov Group over twenty-five years ago, after visiting the former Yugoslavia and being captivated by the music and dance. She learned her dances from Ken Ward and also from the more experienced members of the Group. Many dances were acquired in the traditional way, as they would have been in the villages, by simply joining in and watching how people danced, and copying their steps.

A few years ago the Zivko Firfov found itself without a teacher, so Joan attended a teachers’ course with the Society for International Folkdance and took over to continue the traditions of the Group.
